Raul Fleischmann

Raul Fleischmann, the moneyed quality human behind The New Yorker Magazine may not have gambled the family fortune(Fleischmann’s yeast)  but he never wavered in his gamble to finance a think tank literary magazine (The talk of the town”)In the Big Apple.
                                       II
Where else could one get a handle on talk of the town, critiques on literary undertakings: (the 1907 McDowell Colony, NewHampshire) movies, books, music.(Aaron Copeland’s“Appalachian Spring”)  Brooklyn’s  old Boys High School, off Fulton Street.
What’s easier to buy? dreams or nightmares?
Intrigue like Dore Schry’s’Red Badge of Courage”, the plotting of the Civil War battle gets its 20 century how down at the Culver City studio on West Washington…Metro Goldwyn Mayer..
Of dream making…The Wizard of Oz, Judy Garland’s ‘Over therainbow’ (Yip Harburg)
                                    III
Hold onto your seats! The most decorated soldier(WW2) AudieMurphy cast as the non battle scarred innocent, facing enemy for the first time a mirror of his own survival.
Confronting  survival of the fittest, facing the mirror of himself, which harkens into today’s cyber space, social media acclaims, and the tip taping of the electronic message on this keyboard.
                                   IV
In the face of the huddled intrigue, the producer and director John Huston, fought out the shoot’s clambake: scene by scene, citing the New Yorker’s own circulation manager, Arthur M. Davis, port city of Piraeus, Greece, outside Athens and the Acropolis, the magazine lying on the Captain’s table, the ship sailing toward Cypress…..(Sutton  Place, Arthur two blocks down from Grand Aunt Carrie’s Goldfarb  flagship flower center at 57th and Third Avenue in the Big Apple.
                                         V
In the meantime, Lillian Ross flew out to the coast for a first hand appraisal of the “lights cameras action” battleground.
To  calibrate a climate of empathy, sympathy, social significance, laughter at absurdity…. the ideals that are  perpetuated in public schools and higher education, inspiringthe descendants of immigrants. to go for it”.
To metamorphose into well rounded quality human beings the joy of being alive and well..
                                  VI
Depicting the deceits of spite jealousy fear, talking out of bothcorners of your mouth, triggering ambiguity: a defeating logarithmwhere the intrigue outweighs the grandiose scenario. (“Streetcar named Desire”)
The Bard’s “Measure for Measure” may be an apparition of the “Red Badge” intrigue, but Lew Ayres “All Quiet on the Western Front the vision atrophying as the creative dream is pollutedthrough the nightmare of once kindred souls compromising and selling out..
                                 VII
In as many installments, Lillian Ross demonstrated how the Red Badge”  without the Pablo Picasso touch, succumbed to the clash of temperaments and ego, the ideal being compromised by so few, that the dissing  destroyed the gravity of AudieMurphy’s emancipationknowing himself.
                               VIII
But in the best of all possible worlds, the very vision demands a shattering of compromise and mediocrity .
Enlightenment goes hand in hand with determinism, doesn’t it?
                                  VII
Goethe’s Faust at Weimar? The Bard at the Stratford on Avon?Dante with Beatrice in Romes Seven Steps?  (Lord Byron and Shelly  sneezing up a poetic storm, at the Steps)
A round of applause and honors for Fleischmann yeast and its inspirational magnate Raul Fleischmann.(Fleischmann, New York, Camps Ta-ri-go , Cascade) or its unambiguous
assault on the cheap and tawdry, in the whirl of creative juicesand imagination.
May his ”cool as butter the New Yorker’s yeast continue its commentary and flow forever.

Who among us basketball junkies

Who among us basketball  junkies and honkies that lived during the UCLA legend of Wilbur Johns who would metamorphose into his legendary successor John Wooden!
An All American himself, 77 consecutive NCAA victories….two 7 footers in (JabbarLew Alcindor and the redhead from San Diego, Bill Walden. (6’10”+)
                                      II
A post office in Reseda named after him(Wooden)…caught jogging in Encino, the Ventura Boulevard bumper to bumper traffic honking deliriously, on sharing his presence..in the same space.
                                        III
Out of this hoop fest, a muscular powerful
Built body on the boards named Dennis Rodman, in chasing his coach and father figure  Chuck Daly of the Detroit Pistons, Dennis the menace finished his career at center with the Chicago Bulls: the “um holy holy trio of M.J, Scotty Pippen and Phil Jackson  (the triangle stratagem of Tex Winter, sitting behind coach Jackson, masterminding the flow and ball control , his Kansas State role, mastering his Trojan Wars yesterdays (post WW2)) Alex Hannum and Bill Sharman. In the Duke Wayne riding“shotgun” offense of John Fords “Stagecoach”.
                                 IV
Dennis Rodman was last heard and seen in  North Korea, sitting with the Supreme North Korean leader, the son inheriting his father’s reign.
In this incarnation, the North Korean son , is whiplashing his drive to the boards, warning South Korea of provocations as the time clock winds down
                                          V
Is nothing o n the Planet sacred anymore?
Playing to the raucous fans on each competing side? Everybody and Dennis Rodman getting into the fix, our minor planet twisting  ever so slowly on its axis….

                                         VI
Athletic Drector  Johns appointing John Wooden to replace him, post WW2
Don Barksdale at center (a music store on South Western Avenue, Jackie Robinson answering the phone) Dave Minor, a transferee from Toledo UniversityOhio, where he played in Madison Square Garden, with his left arm in a cast, coach Johns leaving four ducats at Madison Square Garden’s NIT tourney for a Daily Bruin scribe, with a minor in P.E.
                                           VII
What comes to mind is Dennis Rodman. His Detroit Piston coach and father figure…could Dennis the Menace, use his backboard strength and court savvy ,to make peace between North and South  before the Peninsula erupts
Is there a stage akin to the Garden?, Pauley Pavilion? The Korean  peninsula
Where on the planet lurks a mediator, who knows the  NorthKorean leader personally, both in hoop warfare , could mediate the flared up dispute between  the two heads of state, the crisis into a game time clock finito.
                                        VIII
What takes your breath away, however is not the bullying sound and fury of the North Korea or Dennis Rodman’s role in moderating the dictator’s three point shot from downtown…
                                        IX
Within that sound and fury, Ted Turner again turned to his group’s sensitive nature, playing “Judgment at Nurenberg ontee v.
Judy Garland fresh from “Wizard of Oz” and Yip Harberg’sOver the Rainbow”. In a fraulien  courtroom role. (a Stone Canyon Drive neighbor in Bel Air, post WW2)
The civilized pop cosmos and shooting range mentality we inhabit, the story of the Third Reich and Hitler’s tyranny and murder of 6 million Jews is as timely today as it was in 1933-45,not a catatonic hiss or whisper to be heard, except for Rudolph Hess’s flight to escape to England.
A toast to these larger than life quality humans who identified with the massacre all over Europe.
The clash of conscience on trial , the jury all of first hand witnesses at the demonic slaughter and genocide!
                                      X
To turn aside from atrocities, may not be a sin on the surface, but Spencer Tracy’s condemnation of the immorality was powerful as was Burt Lancaster confessing to his self serving complacency.
Maaximillan Schnell (Bobby Lantz’s client) was impeccable and emotionally draining in defense, even after Richard Widmarkvideoed the concentration camp horrors and scientific cannibalism…gas chambers on pretext.
                                        XI
The speeches and confessions brings tears to one’s eyes, man’s inhumanity to man playing out, a pop culture to the contrary.

Sullivan Travels

“Sullivan Travels” herein may lie the emerging remembrance, propelling cyber space and social media says Joel McCrea, the actor and husband, his frau Francis Dee of Woodland Hills,California.
They lay claim to several acres of hard worn real estate in the San Fernando Valley.
                                       II
Inasmuch the lay of the land is the hen pecking syndrome within a mirage, Murray Randolph,(insurance exec) oncmanufacturer of button down Arrow shirts. Entrepreneur turned insurance programmer
Wilshire Boulevard offices, opposite the Ambassador Hotel (and the strains of Freddy Martin’s piano “Tonight we love”, an eternity ago., post WW2. in the City of Angels.
                                     III
Murray was our first link into the hen pecking syndrome, when he tapped one of his  associate hucksters , designating his youthful “counterparts” as a titled vice president in their downtown L.A. offices.
                                       IV
In his penthouse on North Broadway, Los Angeles, he looked out those spacious window.
Lo and behold there was Martha Sota strolling toward the wholesale market, between  Third and Fourth Street, theNorman and Dorothy Chandler L.A. Times (“Los Tiempos”) and City Hall beyond..(CPA Fletcher Bowron in that role of leadership)
Martha once of the East Los Angeles barrio, namely Belvedere Gardens…..Tony Quinn, Margo (Eddie Albert’s protectorate) Eva Gabor’s tee- v co star on “Green Acres”
                                       V
Martha had evolved into the Murray Randolph turf of the San Fernando Valley.,,, the “habla El Espanol” missionary influences of Fathers Serra, Crispy.
A one armed UCL major in Theater Arts  son of an art director at Universal Studios in North Hollywood, he invited Martha to his pop’s Spanish style hacienda in the Hills.
                                       VI
But the hen pecking syndrome perpetuated itself, through the undergraduate dictum and the faculty declensions in theAcademic cosmos If human beings delineating inferior spokes on the wheels of undergraduate spokes and churning….furthering the “Lupe Velez Kathy Jurado” roles ofall the Marthas on our Planet…….whether from Spain, Baja Mexico, Acapulco, Guadalajara…. Mexico City.
                                      VII
“What makes Sammy Run” (the “On the Waterfront” screenwriter…Brando’s :I wuz once a contender”, his own padre, the Paramount Pictures “Presidente of Budd Schullberginterior grasp of Sammy’s guile, his motivations and aggressionsunto the scene.
The hierarchy of social climbing, status seeking humans searching for a panacea to those stepping stones of public acclaim and box office recognition……a man against myth swashbuckling Sullivan Travels” blast.
The pursuit of realization? Right neighborA  place for ‘Te Foreign Correspondent” (Joel McCrea) top hang his hat.
                                      VIII
Therefore Joel McCrea in search of himself,  fled the fantasy pretensions of the silver screen cosmos of Martha and Universal Studios, the Murray Randolph Arrow shirt button down collars…to find out where the lay of the land is… in our marketplace demographics.
                                       IX
Who knew that Martha Sota’s moja, a barrio Lupe Velez Kathy Jurado would carry the party in the hills, opposite Universal Studio in North Hollywood, Lankershim Boulevard, where the starlet fromItaly lived with her m other. No  not Anna Magnanior Sophi Loren. But Gia Scala, a brunette starlet in Joyce Selznick’s   acting school …...losing yourself to become another persona…a crediublke one, neighbor.
But Martha Sota unlike Margo of Belvedere Gardens Junior High, danced to a different tune. The art director’s son, created “Mission Impossible”, tapped the Senorita’s shoulder.
                                        X
In the same breath, Billy Wilder, the columnist from Vienna, was directing Ray Miland (The Lost Weekend”)…. on  his weekend, Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, Joe E. Brown, Marilyn Monroe “Some like it hot”, with Gloria Swanson, Bill Holden “Sunset Boulevrd in his spare time.,can you bel;ieve it, neighbor.….
“Im ready for my close up, Mister De Mille”.
                                            XI
In the meantime back in the hills, the newcomer to the party by the Universal Studio art director’s son was a tall thin GI from Ford Ord, California.
He danced a tango or two with our Martha Soda from the barrio’s Belvedere Gardens, not knowing that Martha’s double back in the Bronx, was to become his wife anmother of his four children
                                             XII
“Jack the Hack” from the Avenue J subway station, back in  Brooklyn, was to make his entrance on  the great stage of middle class existence…waiting for riders in the Midwoodsection of Flatbush.
That was his destiny, neighbor. His meta morphosing from FordOrd, in the fall of 1945,WW2 ending, Jack the Hack, not knowing the life was all a stage. That the innocence of the tango with Martha from Belvedere Gardens would b e his saving grace into the future with Harriet 3000 miles away, waiting in  the Catskill borscht circuit for the ring on her fourth finger righthand.
But it was that tango with Martha Sota that nabbed Jack the Hack into his livery cab fate role.
The youngest driver of the fleet of cabs (the father, three brothers, searching for their  medallion’s thrust at the Avenue J BMT station passenger traffic, waiting to put bread on theirfourth floor apartment,  across ‘J’…between Elfenbein’s bakery and Dubin’s before  WW2..
                                         XIII
Herein lies his entrance o n the stage.Anh  energetic tall basketball center…”I had a left handed hcok shot. I couldn’t miss, “e once said to Stanley Kubrick of Kubrick’s supermarket under the Avenue J BMT local  subway stop, opposite Jack the hack’s father’s fleet of Yellow cabs.
On the opposite side of Jswho became a chess hustler, and migrated into movie making”Space Odyssey” in London. TheMGM Culver City studio, (“Mr.Novak”) giving us the Borehamwood studio (outside London) Ayot St. Lawrence and George Bernard Shaw ‘s village bench. Where he sat ruminating about his leaving Ireland for the London music library, British Museum.
                                     XIV
Jck the Hack’s fate may have begun playing basketball at the old Wingate Field (Midwood Field) a block  beyond the subway station.
Jack the left handed hook pivot center of the Comets;, a intramural team that played out .their sporting  lives while getting an education at Tubby Ross’s Midwood High School on Bedford Anue, across Brooklyn College on Campus Road and Bedford.
                                            XV
Whether it was this academic scenario, it did the Ford Ord PFC,his calling card to rendezvous at UCLA and a Philosophy classwith Professor Piatt in Royce Hall..the 16th century architecture. In the quad!
Was it all Greek to him? The Hack met the pioneer Far Rockaway of the House of Pancakes.
Originally from the East Coast, Al fought it out:  he and his brother, selling coffee to L.A. denizens, passing on some 3 decades later. His brother Jerry, a cofounder, had a disagreement with Al, and left for Australia to start his own entrepreneur  career.
But in the bailiwick of Olivia deHaviland and Moe Howard (Three Stooges”)in Toluca Lake, of the San Fernando Valley.
                                            XVI
Doctor Piatt’s Philosophy thrust was Pragmatism. His assistant was Mr. Meyerhoff whose role was grading the blue book exams. Mr Meyerhoff, a graduate student, was our  reader
He later passed on in  an accidenmt and those blue book flunking  D pluses and F’s thru Subject A rehab course were turned your nrrator around.
Later meeting Doctor Piat on  campus,he confessed to a nmarriage that wasn’t at all compatible with his Professorship, lecturing in Pragmatism..

Two decades afterwards in an all night(Automat) cafeteria on Lexington Avenue off the night traffic …..down a ways from where Peggy Lee was into “My momma done tole me, a man was a two faced….
Your narrator went for a coffee break,

                                  XVIII
A refutation of Thomas Wolfe’s “You can’t go home again”.
In retrospect, Joel McCrea’s “Sullivan Travels” playing out, the reality outweighing the McCrea’s silver screen origins in the Woodland Hills opus of the Fernando Valley.
“I’m ready for my close up, Mr. De Mille.”

Emerging from the womb of Murder Inc

Emerging from the womb of Murder Inc, the yesterdays of hustling bottled sodas to the WPA craftsmen and builders, theirtalents of Meyer Lansky and his aide de camp Bugsy Segal never went unnoticed…Brownsville, Las Vegas, Beverly Hills.
                                             II
But for a 30 day coma of typhoid fever and a death dwelling fever of 106, the powers to be at Beth El Hospital (Brookdale)on Linden Boulevard in East Flatbush, gave an about face, upon your narrator, when a last minute blood transfusion by a Berderchev born Kaminsky,
an uncle, brought out our ten year old blue eyes to open wide and seize our soul socking and relocking into our frail psyche from whence it had about vanished into the higher strata of consciousness.
                                     III
“Believe me, brethren. There’s  no more formidable foe than the day to day struggle confronting the inevitable debacle, the very demons of the departing soul.
                                             IV
Whatever the Wily Loman attributes of our unselfish Uncle Philfrom Bereditchev (a village outside Kiev, Ukraine, with his boisterous personality (from Odessa, in steerage, to Buffalo,N.Y. with his four sisters and brother, mother and father, he was a hero in our once dying blues.
“Do not give your nephew any transfusion! Type A?” dictated his wife and mother of their two boys.
You have your own family. Think of them! Why go out of your way for a nephew you hardly ever broke bread with. Did he ever think of our needs? “
Throw his carcass to the hyenas, the wolves of Jack London’s Call of the Wild”. Jack Larue’s menacing gang of outlaws in Studio City, outside Gene Autry’s Republic Studio.
“It’s that kind of dog eat dog planet, lissen to me Phil. I’m your sweetheart, wife, mother. Don’t expose yourself to his death dwelling microbes and bacteria. No penicillin  or drugs exist.Think of your family. Those who love you,” said his wife, mother of their two boys, ….years later working  behind a department store jewelry counter in down town Brooklyn.
Not that far from the stricken boy’s father. The Name Detectivethe official interpreteat the Surrogates Court,(Judge Wingate and his alter ego Mr. Stapleton) and probate administrator of Barbra Streisand’s father’s estate.
                                    V
So Brethren in the name of the four Warner Brothers, your narrator was bugged with blessings.  “Louis Pasteur” “Dr. Erlich’s magic bullet” *Emile Zola” …a “Yellow Jack:” flick on malaria, from  another studio.”Madame Curie”  “Devil’s Island”…and the *Dreyfus case…..no yellow fever here, but a  moral cover up of complicity in the inhumane disease of a”Doctor Jekyl & Mr Hyde bipolar split personality, the bully character trait within the cream cheese bandit’s soul, finding his way from Safeway’s market on Pico and South Western to Mulholland Drive, in the Hollywood Hills.
                                     VI
What brings me to Gregory Peck’s revelation, brethren.
Working as an usher at Radio City Music Hall, he got his boot camp  yearnings for the acting game(Brando, Stella Adler’s method? Shelly Winters Paul Newman’s Stanislavsky) and those synchronized leggy dancers between the flicks.…..
The Radio City Rockettes? would you believe it, brethren?
                                          VII
Post Word War 2, he emerged as a leading man, his star into a submarine constructed home, on a splendid Holmly Hill Sunset Boulevard site, several miles West of the mansion at North Beverly Drive, opposite the Beverly Hills Hotel, where Bugsy Segal was gunned down.
                                         VIII
Here a UCLA coed met this once frail typhoid fever stricken law student. Little knowing that the scene belonged to  “the killing of the mocking  bird ”legal eagle, the Radio City Music Hall usher, pre World War2 History, evolving…
Gregory Peck in to his second marriage, bonded with “Twelve O’clock High” with Dean Jagger, a WW2 Air Force co pilot, living  near Zucky’s deli in Santa Monica several Avenues from the Palisades and Shangri-la, where the Name Detective’s wifelived…. mother of their once dying Typhoid Fever ten year oldson….
                                       IX
Which brings to mind a cyberspace coincidence of August 9i, in our century of 21.
“What is your name?” your narrator asked of the technician, playing out his diagnosis of the “Flying Philosopher”…. like a surgeon at Maimonides Medical Center, of computerconfigurations,  electronic tracking of blood clots…..the computer analysis beyond mortal uncertainties into the sublime of disease and  mortality.
                                        X
“My name is Ishmael” he said, his voice tingling with an earthiness and joy, that embellished his whole navigational cruise..
Lissen my friend and you shall hear the mid night ride of …no not Paul Revere but your own   chat E mail phone technician’s links..
Out of Moby Dick…My name is Ishmael!”
                                               XI
A quality human being! .With a quiet mind and the openmindedness of  all of us, who should be proud to rub off on, in our own metamorphosis, engaging our personas to computer threshold on the good ship “Moby Dick” .
